A Human Design chart is built from your exact birth moment — the position of every planet in your Personality calculation, and the same set of positions roughly three months earlier for your Design calculation. Both sets are translated through the I Ching wheel into your 26 conscious and unconscious gate activations, which then determine your Type, Authority, Profile, Centers, and Channels.

For that translation to be right, three inputs need to be accurate:

• Birth date — the date in the local civil calendar where you were born. The calculator handles Julian and Gregorian dates and historical edge cases automatically.
• Birth time — ideally within 15 minutes of the actual moment. The Sun's I Ching line moves roughly every 6 minutes, so an hour of uncertainty can shift Profile lines and the Sun gate.
• Birth place — used to resolve the IANA time zone, including historical Daylight Saving and pre-1970 time-zone offsets. A wrong location can silently shift the chart by 30 minutes or more.

The Design calculation uses the standard 88-degree solar arc — the moment when the Sun was 88 degrees behind its Personality position, which works out to roughly 87–89 days before birth. This is the reference value used across the Human Design system and ensures your chart matches any other professionally calculated BodyGraph.

Time zones are resolved automatically from the birth location using the IANA tz database, including historical DST transitions and pre-modern offsets. You do not need to know your UTC offset — selecting the correct city is enough. The planetary data itself is Swiss-Ephemeris-grade, the astronomical standard used by professional astrology and Human Design software.

If you have a rectified or notarized birth time, your chart is essentially exact. If your birth time is approximate, treat your Profile, Authority, and Sun-line gate as the most time-sensitive values, and lean on the parts of the chart that don't change minute-to-minute — Type, defined Centers, and most Channels are usually stable across small time errors.

Your BodyGraph is the visual heart of the chart. Even before reading any text, the shapes tell you most of what you need:

• Filled (colored) Centers are defined — they produce a consistent, reliable energy you can rely on every day. You broadcast this energy to others.
• Empty (white) Centers are open — they take in and amplify the energy of others. Open Centers are where you are most influenced by the environment and the people you spend time with.
• Gate numbers sit around the perimeter of each Center. An activated Gate (one of the 26 activations from your chart) is marked, with red and black indicators for unconscious (Design) and conscious (Personality) activations respectively.
• Channel connections run between Centers. A Channel is fully defined only when both of its end Gates are activated — that connection is what defines a Center and gives you a fixed energy pattern.
• Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile appear as labels outside the graphic, summarizing the entire chart in a single line.

The way to read a chart is outward to inward: start with Type and Strategy, then Authority, then Profile, then move into defined Centers and Channels, and finally to individual Gates. The Type and Strategy give you the daily energetic posture; the Centers and Channels show what stays consistent across your life; and the Gates color in the specific themes you carry.
