The 64 Gates
Complete reference, organized by Center

Every Human Design BodyGraph is built from 64 gates — one for each hexagram of the I Ching. A gate is a doorway: when a planet falls inside its slice of the zodiac at the moment of your birth (or 88 degrees before it), that gate is activated in your chart. This page is the full reference: all 64 gates, what each one means, and which Center it belongs to.

I Ching origins

the 64 hexagrams

The Chinese I Ching, or Book of Changes, dates back roughly three thousand years and catalogues 64 archetypal life situations, each represented by a six-line hexagram. Each line is either solid (yang) or broken (yin), and the 2⁶ = 64 combinations form a complete map of human experience. The arrangement most commonly used in Human Design is the King Wen sequence — the order attributed to King Wen of the Zhou dynasty around 1050 BCE.

When Ra Uru Hu received the body of teaching that became Human Design in 1987, he mapped the 64 King Wen hexagrams onto the wheel of the zodiac, each hexagram occupying exactly 5°37′30″ of the 360° circle. The 64 gates in your BodyGraph are therefore the same 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, expressed not as oracular guidance but as the structural geometry of who you are.

Each gate carries the theme of its hexagram — its name, its keywords, its lines — but the Human Design reading adds a second dimension: where that gate sits in the BodyGraph, what Center it activates, and which channel (if any) it forms with its partner gate.

How gates are activated

two birthcharts in one

A gate is activated when a planet sits inside its slice of the zodiac at one of two moments: your moment of birth (the Personality calculation, shown in black) or roughly 88 degrees of solar arc before it (the Design calculation, shown in red — which in clock time is around 88 days before birth).

Each of those two calculations produces 13 planetary activations: the Sun, the Earth, the Moon, the North Node, the South Node, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. That gives 26 total activations across both birthcharts, which translates into anywhere from a handful to as many as 24 distinct gates active in your BodyGraph (some planets may share gates).

The Sun and Earth are weighted most heavily — they account for about 70% of the energy you live. The other planets add flavour, depth, and detail. Reading a chart well means knowing which gates are active and which planet activated them — because a gate activated by Saturn carries a very different texture than the same gate activated by Venus.

Conscious vs Unconscious gates

Personality (black) · Design (red)

Personality — black

Personality activations come from the planetary positions at the exact moment of your birth. They represent your conscious mind — the part of you that you experience as "I." You recognise these themes; you can talk about them; you identify with them.

Design — red

Design activations come from roughly 88 degrees of solar arc before birth. They represent your body's intelligence — the part of you that runs your biology, your unconscious reactions, your shadow. You do not see these themes directly; others see them in you long before you do.

Mixed (black + red)

If both calculations land on the same gate, it appears in both colors. These doubly activated gates are particularly emphasised in your life — both your mind and your body agree on the theme, which usually means it is unmissable.

The Profile

The single most important detail is the line of your Personality Sun and the line of your Design Sun — together they form your Profile, the costume your personality and body wear together. Profile is a deep topic of its own.

Hanging gates

the half-channels that build bridges

A hanging gate is a gate that is activated in your chart without its channel partner. In the BodyGraph it shows up as a coloured gate sitting at the edge of a Center, drawn but not connecting to anything. Hanging gates are not flaws — they are the most relational pieces of your design.

Because the channel is incomplete, your chart is looking for the missing gate in other people. When you meet someone whose chart carries that gate, the channel completes — temporarily, energetically, but very tangibly. You feel suddenly connected, more articulate, more capable. The technical term is electromagnetic attraction, and it is one of the cleanest explanations for why certain strangers feel like home within minutes.

People with many hanging gates tend to be social bridge-builders, drawn into networks and partnerships because their design literally requires others to express its full range. People with few or no hanging gates feel more self-contained — the channels they have are already complete inside their own chart.

Frequently asked questions

five quick answers
How are the gates in my chart actually activated?

A gate becomes active when, at the moment of your birth (Personality) or roughly 88 degrees of solar arc before it (Design), a planet sits inside the slice of the zodiac that corresponds to that hexagram. Every planetary position in your chart fires exactly one of the 64 gates, which is why activations always come in pairs of 13 planetary positions — 13 Personality activations in black and 13 Design activations in red.

What is the difference between a gate and a channel?

A gate is half a channel. Each of the 36 channels in the BodyGraph is built from exactly two gates sitting on opposite Centers. If only one of the two gates is activated in your chart, you have a "hanging gate" — a half-connection that is looking for its partner. If both gates are activated, the channel is fully defined and both Centers get connected.

What are hanging gates and why do they matter?

A hanging gate is a gate that is activated in your chart without its channel partner. It looks for completion in others — you tend to be magnetically drawn to people who carry the missing gate, because together the two of you complete the channel. This is one of the most reliable mechanics behind why certain people feel suddenly important the moment you meet them.

What do the line numbers on each gate mean?

Every gate is divided into 6 lines, mirroring the 6 lines of an I Ching hexagram. The line number on a planetary activation tells you exactly which sixth of the gate that planet sits in, and the two Sun/Earth lines together form your Profile (for example 5/1, 3/5). Lines add nuance — the same gate expressed through line 1 versus line 6 reads very differently in a chart.

How do I read the gates in my own chart?

Pull up your free BodyGraph and look at the small numbers on the edge of each Center. Black numbers are your Personality (conscious) gates — what your mind recognises. Red numbers are your Design (unconscious) gates — what your body lives but your mind cannot see directly. Knowing the gate, which Center it sits on, and whether its channel partner is also activated tells you nearly everything you need.
