Authority & Strategy
Your body's decision-making compass

Your Inner Authority is the body's built-in mechanism for making correct decisions — and it is not your mind. The mind processes, weighs, and rationalizes; the body decides. Once you understand which of the seven authorities your chart carries and you learn to listen to it through real decisions, you stop second-guessing yourself. This page is the hub: the seven authorities, how Strategy and Authority work together, and how to find yours in your own BodyGraph.

Why your Inner Authority matters

mind vs. body

The mind is conditioned

Your open centers — the white ones on your BodyGraph — absorb and amplify the energy of the people around you. The mind, sitting on top of that input, learns to argue everyone else's case. It is a brilliant tool for processing the world, but it was never designed to be the deciding voice.

The body knows what is correct for you

Each Authority is a different doorway through which the body speaks: a wave of emotion, a gut sound, a flash of intuition, a vocal recognition, the lift of willpower. These signals are not opinions — they are your design responding to the actual moment, in real time, with information your mind cannot synthesize.

Alignment = signature feeling

When you live according to your Strategy and Authority, your Type's signature settles in: satisfaction for Generators, peace for Projectors, success for Manifestors, surprise for Reflectors. The signature is the felt sense that you are in the right life — and it is reliable feedback that the mechanism is working.

Misalignment = not-self theme

Override your Authority for long enough and the not-self theme appears: frustration, bitterness, anger, or disappointment, depending on your Type. The not-self is not a verdict on you — it is feedback from the body that something in the recent stretch of decisions was made by the mind instead of by your design.

The 7 Authorities

in hierarchy order
01

Emotional Authority (Solar Plexus)

~50% of population

Emotional Authority is the most common Inner Authority in Human Design, present in roughly half the population. It belongs to anyone with a defined Solar Plexus center, and it overrides every other Authority — if you have a defined Solar Plexus, that is your Authority regardless of what else is defined. The core teaching is direct: there is no truth in the now.

The emotional system runs on a wave. You move up toward hope, optimism, and "yes", then back down through doubt, skepticism, and "no", and the truth of a decision only appears once you have ridden the wave from one end to the other. A choice that felt obvious at the peak often looks naive at the trough, and vice versa — neither extreme is the answer. Clarity is what is left when the wave has moved through.

Practically, this means waiting. Hours for small decisions, days for medium ones, weeks or months for major ones. Sleep on it — three times. Tell people you need time. The hardest part is not the waiting itself but the social pressure to decide now; learning to hold the line ("I'll let you know") is the practical work of Emotional Authority.

02

Sacral Authority (Sacral response)

Generators / MGs without Solar Plexus

Sacral Authority belongs to Generators and Manifesting Generators whose Solar Plexus is open. The Sacral is the engine of life-force energy, and it speaks in the now through a sound and a vibration. The classic Sacral response is "uh-huh" (yes, an opening) and "uhn-uhn" (no, a closing) — pre-verbal, immediate, located in the gut.

Sacral Authority works in real time, but only in response. The Sacral does not initiate — it answers. Ask it a yes/no question and listen for the sound. The first sound you make, before the mind has time to dress the answer in language, is the truth. The challenge for Sacral beings is that culture teaches us to translate gut responses into polite reasoning, so people grow up overriding their own bodies dozens of times a day without noticing.

A reliable practice is to ask binary questions out loud: "Do I want to take this meeting?" "Is this the right project?" The sound matters more than the words — tone, energy, and where it comes from in the body. With practice, the Sacral becomes the most consistent decision-maker in the system: instant, embodied, and almost impossible to fake.

03

Splenic Authority (Spleen)

Projectors / Manifestors with defined Spleen, open Solar Plexus and Sacral

Splenic Authority is the spontaneous, in-the-now intuition that comes from a defined Spleen center with no Solar Plexus or Sacral defined above it in the hierarchy. The Spleen is the oldest awareness center in the body — survival, health, and the immediate sense of what is and is not safe — and it speaks in a whisper, not a shout.

Splenic Authority speaks only once. There is a single quiet impulse, a knowing, a gentle nudge, and if the mind dismisses it the Spleen does not argue or repeat itself. This is the most delicate Authority in the system, and also one of the most accurate when it is honored. Splenic beings learn to act on first instincts: the impulse to leave a room, take a different route, say yes to a stranger, or pull back from a deal.

The challenge with Splenic Authority is trust. Because the whisper is so quiet and the mind so loud, splenic beings often catch themselves saying "I knew" after ignoring the original signal. The training is to follow the first nudge before the mind has time to override it — even when it cannot be explained in words.

04

Ego / Heart Authority (Heart / Will)

defined Heart, open Spleen, Sacral, Solar Plexus

Ego or Heart Authority comes from a defined Heart center (sometimes called the Will center) without higher motors defined above it. The Heart is the seat of willpower, vitality, and self-interest — and Ego Authority makes decisions by asking, in a way most people are taught to suppress: what's in it for me? Do I have the will?

For Ego Authority beings, "selfish" is not an insult; it is the mechanism. The Heart center can only sustain commitments it is genuinely energized by, so decisions need to pass through the willpower filter. If the body does not feel the lift of I want this for me, the commitment will collapse, no matter how noble the cause. Honoring this is how Ego beings stay healthy and keep their promises — by only making promises the Heart actually wants to keep.

A practical test: speak the decision out loud and listen for the spontaneous first sentence afterward. Is it about resources, time, recognition, energy? That is the Heart speaking. Trust those words even when the surrounding culture tries to label them as ego-driven — they are exactly the information the system is designed to give.

05

Self-Projected Authority (G Center)

Projectors with defined G, all motors open

Self-Projected Authority is a Projector-only Authority, found in Projectors whose G Center (identity and direction) is defined but who have no defined motors. The mechanism is unusual and beautiful: you decide by speaking out loud and listening to your own voice. The truth is in the throat — what you hear yourself say is the signal.

This means decisions are not made in silence. Self-Projected beings need to talk through a choice, ideally with a trusted person who will simply listen without steering. The point is not advice. The point is to hear which words ring true and which words land flat when they leave your mouth. The body knows the answer before the mind does, and it routes the answer through your own voice.

A practice that works well: pick a friend who can hold space without interrupting, and talk through the decision in full sentences. Pay attention to which version of the story feels alive in your throat and which version feels rehearsed or hollow. That difference is your Authority speaking.

06

Mental Projector (No Inner Authority)

Projectors with all motors open and no defined Heart / G with motor

A small subset of Projectors have no Inner Authority at all — no defined Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, Heart, or G with motor. These are called Mental Projectors, and the design is fundamentally environmental. Your decisions are not made by an internal signal; they are made through being in the right place with the right people, and through talking decisions through.

The teaching is that Mental Projectors need a sounding board — trusted people whose presence and questions help you recognize, in conversation, what is correct for you. The other person is not the authority; they are the mirror. The right environment will pull the right answer out of you, and the wrong environment will produce confusion no matter how clearly you think.

A working approach: identify two or three people whose presence consistently makes you feel like yourself, and reserve major decisions for conversations with them. Notice the rooms, cities, and circles where clarity arises easily — those places are part of your decision-making system, not just a backdrop to it.

07

Lunar Authority (Reflectors)

Reflectors only — all 9 centers open

Lunar Authority belongs to Reflectors, the rarest Type (around 1% of the population), whose entire BodyGraph is open. With no defined centers, Reflectors do not have a fixed internal Authority — they have a cycle. The Moon moves through all 64 gates in 28.5 days, and Reflectors are designed to wait one full lunar cycle before any major decision.

During the cycle, a Reflector will pass through every kind of definition temporarily as the Moon activates different gates. The decision is not made on any single day of the cycle — it is made by feeling how the question lands across all the moods, energies, and clarities the month produces. By the end of the cycle, an answer that has remained consistent across every weather pattern is almost certainly correct.

For everyday choices, Lunar Authority adapts to a smaller scale: a few days of letting the question marinate, paying attention to which version of the answer stays steady. The non-negotiable, though, is that Reflectors should never make life-shaping decisions in a single day. The cycle is the design.

Strategy + Authority = your formula

how and when

Strategy and Authority are two halves of the same instrument. Strategy describes how your Type is designed to engage with the world: Generators and Manifesting Generators respond, Projectors wait for the invitation, Manifestors inform before initiating, Reflectors wait a lunar cycle. Strategy answers the question of mechanism.

Authority describes when or if to engage with any specific opportunity. Once life brings you a choice — through whichever channel your Strategy uses — your Authority is what confirms whether this particular yes or no is correct for you, today, in this body. Authority answers the question of timing and truth.

Together they are the full decision-making framework: Strategy keeps you in the right kind of situation, Authority keeps you in the right specific decision. Living them in combination is the entire practice. Without Strategy, the body's signals arrive with no context. Without Authority, even the right context produces mind-driven decisions. With both, the system runs.

How to identify your Authority

read your chart
Sample Human Design BodyGraph with Authority highlighted in the top-right summary panel

Generate your free chart and look at the summary panel in the top-right of the BodyGraph. Your Authority is listed there alongside your Type, Strategy, and Profile. The chart itself shows you why: scan your defined centers (the colored ones), and apply the hierarchy in order — Solar Plexus first, then Sacral, then Spleen, then Heart, then G, then "Mental" if nothing motorized is defined.

For Reflectors, the chart shows no defined centers at all — every shape is white. If that's your BodyGraph, Lunar Authority is your design and the 28.5-day cycle is your mechanism.

Once you know your Authority, the more useful work is reading the corresponding in-depth article and starting to practice with real, low-stakes decisions. The theory is fast; the embodiment is the years.

The 7-year experiment

timeline

Months 1–9: noticing

For the first seven to nine months, the work is purely observational. Apply Strategy and Authority to as many decisions as you can, and notice — without trying to fix anything — when you override them. The patterns that emerge in this period are the map of where the mind has been deciding in place of the body.

Year 1: signature appears

Around the one-year mark, the Type's signature feeling starts to show up repeatedly — satisfaction, peace, success, or surprise — and the not-self theme becomes a clear contrast. The experiment is no longer abstract; the body is giving feedback that the mechanism is real.

Years 2–3: deconditioning

The deeper deconditioning happens through the body's cells over roughly seven years, with the first major shifts arriving in years two and three. Patterns absorbed through open centers begin to release, and decisions that once felt impossible start to feel routine.

Years 4–7: integration

By years four through seven, Strategy and Authority stop being something you "apply" and become how you operate. You may still slip into mental decisions — everyone does — but the cost is now visible immediately, and recovery is fast. The experiment becomes the life.

Frequently asked questions

five quick answers
What if my Authority says no but logically it makes sense to do it?

Trust your Authority. The mind can rationalize almost anything — it has been conditioned for years to weigh pros and cons, anticipate other people's reactions, and chase perceived safety. Your Authority is the body's signal, and it carries information the mind cannot access in the same way. A correct "no" from your Authority is not a refusal of logic; it is your design telling you the timing, the people, or the energy is not right for you. Logic that overrides Authority is exactly how people end up exhausted in correct-looking lives that don't actually fit.

Can my Authority change over the course of my life?

No. Your Authority is set at the moment of birth, based on which Centers are defined in your chart. Definition itself does not change — the planetary fixings that produced your design are permanent. What does change is your relationship to your Authority: in the early years, the mind tends to dominate; as you live your design, the body's signals become more recognizable and easier to trust. Many people say their Authority "got louder" — what actually got louder is their ability to hear it.

Which Authority is the best one to have?

None — and that is a feature of the system, not a flaw. All seven authorities are valid and complete. Each one is matched to a particular type of decision-making intelligence: emotional clarity over time, gut response in the now, instinctive whisper, willpower and self-interest, vocal self-recognition, environmental reflection, and a full lunar cycle of perspective. Problems do not come from having a "weak" Authority. They come from trying to use someone else's Authority — usually the mental, decide-now mode that culture rewards but only one Type (Mental Projectors) actually has access to.

I'm Emotional — how long should I wait for clarity?

Long enough for a full emotional wave to move through you, which is usually days for everyday decisions and weeks for large life choices. The emotional wave is not a mood — it is a chemical wave that takes you up to hopeful peaks and down to skeptical lows, and the truth of a decision only emerges after you have visited both ends. A useful practice is the "sleep on it" rule, repeated three times: if a decision still feels correct after three full sleep cycles spread across the wave, it likely is. If urgency keeps pressing you, that is almost always a sign someone else needs an answer faster than your body can give one.

What if I don't have an Inner Authority? (Mental Projector or Reflector)

You are not broken or lacking — you have a different mechanism. Mental Projectors (Projectors with no defined Sacral, Solar Plexus, Splenic, Ego, or G-Center authority) are designed to make decisions through their environment and through conversation. You are invited into the right place, and you talk through decisions with trusted people — not for their advice, but to hear yourself out loud. Reflectors have Lunar Authority and need the full 28.5-day lunar cycle to feel into a major decision. In both cases, your decision-making is environmental and relational — which is a feature, not a bug.
