The 36 Channels
Complete circuit reference

A channel is the wire that connects two Centers in your BodyGraph. Each channel is built from exactly two gates sitting on opposite Centers — and when both gates are activated in your chart, the channel is defined and both Centers light up. There are 36 channels in the full design, organised into three circuit groups (Individual, Collective, Tribal). This page is the complete reference.

How channels form

two gates, one wire

Each of the 36 channels in the BodyGraph is built from exactly two gates sitting on opposite Centers. The two gates always sit at the two endpoints of the channel line drawn between the Centers, and the channel becomes defined — fully coloured in your chart — only when both gates are independently activated by a planet in your Personality or Design calculation.

When the channel is defined, current flows between the two Centers and both Centers light up (gain colour). When only one of the two gates is activated, you have a hanging gate — a half-channel that looks for its missing partner in other people. Many of the most magnetic relationships in life happen because one person carries the gate the other has been missing, and together they complete a channel neither could complete alone.

A channel is never partially defined. It is either complete (both gates fired) or incomplete (only one fired, or neither). This binary nature is what makes channel reading unusually clean compared to many other parts of Human Design.

The three circuit groups

Individual · Collective · Tribal

Individual Circuit

Energy that mutates and empowers. Individual channels carry the new — innovation, creativity, the unique mark. Their keynote is empowerment; their sound is melancholy when blocked, breakthrough when flowing. Subdivided into Knowing and Centering streams.

Collective Circuit

Energy that organises the wider group. Collective channels carry pattern, logic, understanding, and the abstract sense of human experience across time. Their keynote is sharing; they exist for the benefit of humanity at large. Subdivided into Logic (Understanding) and Sensing (Abstract) streams.

Tribal Circuit

Energy that supports the community materially and emotionally. Tribal channels carry the bargain, the bond, the contract. Their keynote is support; they exist for the tribe. Subdivided into Defense and Ego streams.

Why circuit matters

Knowing which circuits dominate your design tells you who your energy is for. Individual designs serve themselves and inspire others; Collective designs serve humanity at large; Tribal designs serve the people directly around them.

Defined vs open channels

the math of consistency

Defined channel

Both gates activated in your chart. The channel is fully coloured; both endpoint Centers are defined. Consistent energy runs between them across your life.

Hanging gate

Exactly one of the two gates activated. The half-channel looks for completion in other people, creating magnetic attraction to those who carry the missing partner gate.

Open channel

Neither gate activated. The channel does not exist in your design. You experience that energy only when it is present in others around you — variable and conditioning.

Number of defined channels

Most charts have 3–10 fully defined channels. More definition = more consistency, less variability. Reflectors have zero defined channels — they reflect entirely.

Channels are what define Centers

the chain of definition

A Center in your BodyGraph is defined only when at least one channel coming into it is fully complete. Individual gates do not define a Center on their own — you can have many active gates inside a Center and still have that Center open, if none of those gates have completed a channel with the connecting Center.

This is why channels are the structural backbone of the chart. Type itself is determined by which Centers are defined and how they connect — and Centers are defined by channels. The Sacral being defined makes you a Generator; a motor connected to the Throat through channels makes you a Manifestor (or a Manifesting Generator if you are also Sacral); no channels at all makes you a Reflector. Channel definition is the algebra underneath everything else in the design.

When you look at your chart, the first thing to identify is which channels are defined. That tells you which Centers light up. That tells you your Type. And Type tells you your Strategy — the way you move through the world that lets your design work as designed.

Frequently asked questions

five quick answers
What exactly is a channel in Human Design?

A channel is the energetic wire that connects two Centers in your BodyGraph. Each channel is built from exactly two gates, sitting on opposite Centers. When both gates are activated at your moment of birth (or in the Design calculation 88 degrees earlier), the channel is fully defined — and the two Centers it connects both become defined as well. There are 64 gates and 36 channels in the full BodyGraph; the channels are the bridges that make your design coherent.

How does a channel get fully defined versus only half?

Each gate of a channel must be independently activated by a planet in your chart. If both gates of a channel (for example Gate 64 and Gate 47, which together form Channel 64-47) are activated, the channel is complete — the wire is whole and current flows between the Centers. If only one of the two gates is activated, you have a hanging gate that is looking for its missing partner in other people. This is why some relationships feel so unusually generative: the other person carries the gate you have been missing, and together you complete a channel that neither of you can complete alone.

What is a circuit, and why do channels belong to circuits?

A circuit is a family of channels that share a particular theme of energy flow. Human Design recognises three primary circuit groups: Individual (energy that mutates and innovates), Collective (energy that organises the larger group through logic or sensing), and Tribal (energy that supports the community materially and emotionally). Each of the 36 channels belongs to one of these groups, which means knowing your channels tells you not just where your energy is — it tells you what kind of contribution your design makes to the wider system.

Does the number of defined channels in my chart matter?

It matters in the sense that fewer defined channels means more open centers — and more variability in how you experience life. People with many defined channels feel internally consistent across contexts; people with few defined channels feel chameleon-like, mirroring whatever room they are in. Neither is better. The work is the same in both cases: live your Strategy and Authority, and let the design unfold. Reflectors — the rarest Type — have zero fully defined channels and live entirely through what they reflect from the world around them.

How do I find my channels in my own BodyGraph?

Pull up your free Human Design chart and look at the lines connecting the Centers. Any colored line — solid red, solid black, or split red-and-black — is a defined channel. The two numbers at each end of the line are the paired gates of that channel. A line drawn in but not coloured (or coloured only at one end) is a hanging gate, not a fully defined channel. Most charts have between three and ten fully defined channels, though the range is wide. Knowing them is the fastest way to read your specific design.
