What do the red and black numbers on my Human Design chart mean?
The black column is your Personality: the planetary positions at your exact birth moment, representing what you're consciously aware of about yourself. The red column is your Design: the positions from roughly 88 days before birth, representing body-level programming you generally don't perceive but others notice in you. Every number is a gate, and the digit after the dot is its line — so 34.2 means Gate 34, Line 2.
Both columns feed the same BodyGraph. A center turns colored when a channel is completed, and it doesn't matter whether the two end gates came from the red side, the black side, or one of each — the mechanics treat them identically. What differs is the flavor: Personality activations tend to be the parts of yourself you'd describe in an interview, while Design activations are the parts your family would describe about you.
The Sun and Earth rows carry the most weight. Your Personality Sun and Earth plus your Design Sun and Earth form your Incarnation Cross, and their lines produce your Profile — Personality Sun line first, Design Sun line second, so 5/1 means a Personality Sun in line 5 and a Design Sun in line 1.

- Why is the Design side calculated 88 days earlier?
- It marks the point where the Sun was 88 degrees of solar arc before your birth position — in Human Design, when the body's form is considered to have received its imprint.
- What does the number after the decimal point mean?
- The line — each of the 64 gates has 6 lines, and the line adds the specific flavor within that gate's theme.
- Is the red or the black side more important?
- Neither. They define the chart equally; the split only describes whether you experience that activation consciously or unconsciously.
