Type
One of five energy types — Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector — shaping how you exchange energy with the world.
A Human Design test doesn't ask you questions about yourself. You enter your birth date, time, and location, and the planetary positions at that exact moment are converted into a personal chart called a BodyGraph — which gives you your Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, 9 Centers, 64 Gates, and 36 Channels. Because the result is calculated rather than self-reported, it doesn't shift with your mood or self-perception, and it doesn't change over your lifetime. Free, instant, no signup.
One of five energy types — Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector — shaping how you exchange energy with the world.
The way your Type is designed to initiate — respond, inform-then-initiate, wait for invitation, or wait a lunar cycle.
Your body-based decision rhythm — Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental, or Lunar.
Twelve possible role combinations (1/3, 5/1, 6/2 …) blending your conscious and unconscious life themes.
Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, Root — each either defined (consistent) or open (variable).
The 64 Gates (I Ching archetypes) and the 36 Channels they form — the fixed circuitry of your design.
Most tests people mean when they say "personality test" are self-report questionnaires. MBTI is the clearest example: it's based on Carl Jung's theory and sorts people into 16 types across four dichotomies, entirely from how you answer questions about yourself. Because it relies on that self-report, results can drift over time or across different moods.
A Human Design chart is fixed at birth. Your Type, Authority, and Profile don't change, since they're derived from planetary positions rather than self-assessment. Type in particular is a mechanical read of which Centers and Channels your birth data defined — which is why a self-report quiz can't produce it and only a calculated chart can.
The two kinds of system also aim at different things. A personality taxonomy ends at a description of who you are. Human Design is built primarily as a decision-making and energy-management framework — Strategy and Authority — rather than a personality-trait taxonomy.
To be fair about it: Human Design has never been validated through peer-reviewed research, and it borrows quantum-physics vocabulary metaphorically rather than as a scientific claim. The most honest way to evaluate it is the way its own material frames it — not as a belief to accept, but as an experiment to run by following your Strategy and Authority and noticing what changes.
Your Type isn't a personality guess — it's read directly off your chart in three checks.
The four motor centers are the Sacral, the Root, the Solar Plexus, and the Heart/Ego. "Motor to Throat" means one of those four is joined to the Throat by a fully defined channel — both end gates colored in — either directly or through a chain of defined channels. That single wiring question is what separates a Generator from a Manifesting Generator, and a Projector from a Manifestor.
You don't need to work this out manually. Generate your free BodyGraph and the Type is stated at the top of the reading, along with the Strategy and Authority that follow from it.
"Accuracy" means two different things here. The calculation itself — which Gates, Centers, Type, and Authority you get — is deterministic and exact once you enter a correct birth date, time, and location. Whether the resulting description feels accurate to you is a separate, subjective question that isn't scientifically testable.
On the calculation side, precision matters a lot: even a 15-minute error in birth time can shift a Gate line or, in edge cases, change your Type or Authority, because the underlying planetary ephemeris is time-sensitive. Check the input in this order.
A free chart is not less accurate than a paid one: the calculation behind it is the same regardless of price, and what paid products typically add is more written interpretation layered on top of the same calculation. If you don't know your exact time, an approximate one (morning, afternoon, evening) still gives useful information, just with less certainty around a handful of border cases.
Yes. The BodyGraph, your Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, Definition, all 9 Centers, 64 Gates, 36 Channels, and Incarnation Cross are 100% free with no signup or email gate. The optional paid features are the long-form PDF reading and the developer API beyond its free monthly tier.
No. Type is a mechanical read of which centers and channels your birth data defined, so a self-report quiz can't produce it — only a calculated chart can. Because all of this depends on which gates your exact birth moment activated, no quiz or description can substitute for the chart itself.
Use the closest known time and treat your chart as a working draft. Profile lines, Authority, and several Gate activations shift with the minute, so an unknown birth time can change your Profile from 1/3 to 2/4, flip your Solar Plexus between defined and undefined, or change the line of a Sun gate. If you only have a date, default to 12:00 noon and consider rectification before relying on time-sensitive details.
No — Type is fixed by the center definitions in your birth chart and stays the same for life. What can change is your relationship to it: how cleanly you live your Strategy, and how much of the not-self pattern you picked up through your open Centers you're able to release.
MBTI is a self-report questionnaire, based on Carl Jung's theory, that sorts people into 16 types across four dichotomies. Human Design instead calculates a chart from your exact birth date, time, and location, so the result doesn't shift with your mood or self-perception the way a questionnaire answer can. The two systems also aim at different things: MBTI sorts cognitive and personality style, while Human Design is built primarily as a decision-making and energy-management framework.
That's normal at first — most people meet their Type while still living from their conditioned, not-self mind. Human Design is an experiment, not a personality test. Still, verify the input first: the chart can be wrong for exactly one reason, which is bad birth data. If the data is verified and the chart still feels wrong, that's usually conditioning — the description doesn't match how you've learned to live rather than how you're built.
