What are Gates and Channels in Human Design?
The 64 Gates are the doorways of the BodyGraph, each corresponding to one of the I Ching's 64 hexagrams and activated when a planet falls within its slice of the zodiac at your birth or roughly 88 days before it. A Channel is formed when both Gates on either end of a connection between two Centers are activated — there are 36 possible Channels, and a completed one defines both Centers it connects.
If only one of a Channel's two Gates is activated in your chart, that's called a "hanging gate" — a half-connection that looks for completion in others, which is part of why certain people can feel instantly significant when you meet them: they may carry your missing gate.
Each planetary position in your chart activates exactly one Gate, and because there are 13 planetary points calculated twice (once for Personality, once for Design), most charts activate a substantial subset of the 64 Gates, not all of them.
